BATTLE OF WAIREKA.

•THE SIXTIETH ANNIVERSARY, CHURCH PARADE OP VETERANB Yesterday was the sixtieth anniversary of the battle of Waireka, which really saved the town of New Plymouth from devastation by the Maoris, and to mark the occasion the New Plymouth branch of the Veterans' Association held * church parade at the morning service at St. Mary's Anglican Church. Although the band of men who held the defence on that day hag diminished to a very small one indeed now, there were about thirty present yesterday morning, under Captain Black. A fitting tribute to the veterans was paid by U» St. Mary's troop of Boy Scouts, trtlo, under Major ¥. W. Sandford, turned out in good numbers and formed a bodyguard from the gateway to the church door. The service was appropriate to ithe pe« casion, and was conducted by the vicar, the Bev. F. G. The Ven. Archdeacon Evans, vlee-Jfe* sident and chaplain to the Veteramf'A»-' sociation, gave an address in keeping with the event commemorated. In wellchosen words he eulogised the valor of the men who fought on that occasion, and gave thanks for the preservation of th* town from attack and disaster. ENTERTAINMENT OF VETERANS. A meeting of the New Plymouth vet* erans was held on Saturday afternoon, at which a communication was received from those who had planned a motor outing to the Waireka battlefield to-day, that owing to a benzine shortage the trip unfortunately could not be undertaken, and suggesting that it should he deferr#d until the day of the visit of the Prince of Wales to New Plymouth. This alteration was readily agreed to by the veterans, who expressed appreciation of the offer of the citizens concerned, and pawed a vote of thanks to them in anticipation that the cars that, had been offered would be available on the date suggested,
