THE STRATFORD ELECTION.

MAJOR HIKE'S CAMPAIGN. A very largely attended meeting of Major line's general committee was held in the Parish Hall, Stratford, on Saturday afternoon, about 175 being present. Tli e proceedings were most enthusiastic, representatives being present from all parts. The ladies are talcing a special interest in the campaign. Several matters were discussed. The delegates were addressed by Mr. Buokeridge and Major Hine. Major Hine speaks at the Town Hall to-night at Si p.m.

In an advertisement in another column it is announced that a meeting of Major Hine's ladies' committee will be held in the Parish Hall, Stratford, to-morrow (Tuesday), at 2.30 p.m.

MR. MASTERS AT TARIKI. There was a large crowd gathered in the hall, Tariki, on Friday evening, to hear Mr. Masters' address on "Polities and Petition." Mr. V. Harkncs presided. The seating accommodation was insufficient to cope with the number, several people being compelled to stand. The speaker was listened to with the closest attention, and several questions asked were satisfactorily answered. A notable feature of the address was the good* feeling which prevailed throughout, which in this rejpect was a decided contrast to the speaker's previous appearance in Tariki. At the conclusion of the address, Mr. J. Burns nioved, and Mr. Acton seconded, "That this meetim* evnresses its entire confidence in Mr. Masters as member for Stratford, and places on record its appreciation of the good work done during his short term as member. Having a sense of fair play the meeting regrets that he was unseated on a mere technicality." The Teeojution was declared carried. , A DENIAL. Sir,—l notice in your issue of 20th itifit. a statement in Mr. R. Masters' speech at Stratford regarding importation of electors from Mangaweka by Ihe Hine party. I challenge Mr. Masters to prove in any way whatsoever that Mr. Hine or any of his committee or party had anything to do with my desire to vote Jn the .Stratford electorate. It was done % myself purely in the interests of the Reform Party, and I wish to state that Mr. Mitfte™' assertion in this particular matter, like many others, is 1 "lire camonflase. and his statements are not to be relied upon.—l am, WM.
