BRITISHERS v. OTAGO. OLLIVIER BEATS BEAMISH. By Telegraph Press Association. Punadin. Last Night. The lawn tennis matches between the English players Beamish and Lowe, and an Otago team, assisted by Olllvier, the New Zealand champion, took place to-day in fine, but cold weather. In the singles, Ollivler beat Beamish, 6—3, 6—4. The Christchurch man was In fine form, driving accurately, and with a good length. The doubles provided a. fine exhibition, and although the visitor? won three sets out of four the contest was very even, and the Issue was in doubt during the first three sets. Lowe was handicapped by an injury to his leg. Olllvier and Brown ga.ve a surprisingly good exhibition considering they had no previous practice together. The final score, in favor of the visitors, was I—6, 7—3, 6—3, B—3. Gray, a young QUgo player, took one set from Beamish in the other singles game at 6—4, but Beamish won the next two ij—3, 6—l. The Lawn Tennis Association decided to decline the invitation of South Afrlea to send an Australian tfnm there, but will consider sending one Beit year. A motion that negotiations be commenced with New Zealand with the view of changing the venue of the forthcoming Davis Cup match to Melbourne lapsed, as the imover was absent. , TARANAKI v. AUCKLAND. An inter-provlnelal match between Taranaltl and Auckland will be played at Auckland to-morrow. The match will he played on the Eden and Epsom courts. The Taranakt team left for the north by the Barawa last night.
