COAL IS UP.
INCREASE PER TON. MINERS' WAGES: CONSUMERS PAY THE PIPER. Not altogether unexpected is the announcement tlmt private mine-owners have raised the price of coal to the dealera. The Wellington agent for three large northern mines stated to j. N.Z. Times representative that the owners of these mines had informed their customers that from Monday the price of household and steam coal would be advanced 2s per ton, "through" coal Is (id per ton, and slack Is per ton. This makes the price on trucks at the pit mouth jump from 28s Gd to 30s 6d per ton for household coal, 18s (id to .£) for "through" ooal, and 8s to 9s for skek. As the coat of railage from the north is 15s 6d per ton, it will he seen that by the time the retail merchant has delivered to the householder's bin the price per ton will be considerable. Asked what was the reason for the increase, the agent said it was the result of the increased wages given ti the men at the recent conference, It is understood that other big mines have made similar increases to their customers.
