SETTLING EX-SOLDIERS.
EXPENDITURE OF £14,000,000 INVOLVED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. The latest return shows that about £14,000,000 has been expended by way of advances to and the settling of returned soldiers. Commenting on these figures to-day, the Hon. D. H. Guthrie said that, although the first and second years might justly be considered the most difficult as far as the soldiers were concerned. The financial position disclosed by the latest returns was absolutely satisfactory. The amount involved in the postponement of payment of rentals, instalments of mortgages, and in remission of rent on that large xependiture totalled only £40,000, showing that every confidence might be placed in the future success of the returned soldier settlements. The same position was shown in regard to advances made under the repatriation scheme.
