"AN IMPUDENT REQUEST."
STRIKERS WANT MORE PAY. t 1 1 COMMENT BY THE JUDGE. ' , By Telegraph.—Tress Association. l Auckland, Last Night, I The fact that a Union, some member? j of which were on strike, had applied to t the Arbitration Court for an increase'.! f war bonus, occasioned some comment by ( Mr. Justice Stringer at a sitting of the i Court. The Union in question was the Ohine- t muri branch of the Society of Engineers, c and it was stated that the members em- i ployed by the Waihi Grand Junction ■> Company and the Waihi Goldmining 1 Company were on strike. ■ The Judge said the Union was violat- '< ing the principle of the Court, and at the < same time asked for an award to be ' made in its favor. It was a most impu- < dent thing for the Union to do. ' The representative of the employers' said it was feared the engineers "might pull the miners out with them." The Judge said that in the circumstances the Union should not ask the Court to grant the men an increased bonus. He suggested that the application should be withdrawn. The representative of the Union preferred that the application should be dismissed by the Court, and this was accordingly done.
