UNDER-RATE WAGES. ■' By Telegraph—Press Association. Dannevirke, March 20. A case of interest to employers and employees was before Mr. Free, S.M., in which the Inspector of Awards proceeded against tho Hawke's Bay Farmers' Co-operative Association for a penalty of £lO on each of two charges of not paying the award rate to two employees in tho grocery department. Evidence showed that the men concerned agreed, owing to ill-health and the desire to retain the position, to work at some shillings a week less than the award rate, but the permission of the Labor Department was not obtained to the agreement. When a new manager of the firm was appointed he applied to the department for permission to continue payiing under the award rate, which was how the department became acquainted with the breach. The Inspector of Awards said the case was brought to show that there must be no agreement between, employers and employees to accept lower wages than the award granted, unless the consent of the Labor Department was obtained. A fine of £5 on one charge and r £lC on the other was imposed-
