The Irish National entertainment and dance in celebration of St. Patrick's Day, which was held in the Town Hall last night, attracted a crowded attendance, and proved highly enjoyable. Items were contributed by Mrs. McMillan, of Wellington; Mrs. C. Masscy, Miss Milner, Miss Sheehan, and Messrs G. T. Walters, A. D. Bills, P- Coe, J. Haggie. Mrs. Bowler and Miss Moon acted as accompanists. At the conclusion of the concert dancing was carried on until the early hours of the morning, the music being supplied by Mrs. Bianchi's orchestra. Mr. A. Davis was M.C The supper was provided by the ladies' committee. A motor cyclist, returning from the Opunake races yesterday, had a nerveracking experience. He was overtaken by a motor car, which passed so close to him that it struck the side of his machine, sending him flying over to the side of the load. Fortunately, he was uninjured, and his machine was only slightly damaged. The Stratford Chautauqua season opened yesterday afternoon in the large marquee, which has been erected in the Domain. At the evening session, when there was a large attendance, the Mayor (Mr. J. W. McMillan) formally welcomed the Chautauqua representative? to the town, and expressed the hope that the season would be thoroughly successful. The programme at both sesBions included items by the Auckland Lyric Quartette and a lecture on astronomy by Dr. Carpenter. At the Stratford Magistrate's Court this afternoon, before Mr. S- B. Hunter, f.P.. Frederick Hargreaves, a young man. was charged with having on March 17 forged the name of Sam Hop to a cheque, with having uttered the cheque to H. Burmcster, and with having obtained [roods from 11. Burmester by means of a valueless cheque. On tho application of Sergeant Dale, accused was remanded for a week. Constable if.
