OPUNAKE RACES. A SUCCESSFUL GATHERING. ESTHONIA WINS THE CUP. The annual meeting of the Opunake Racing Club at Pihama yesterday proved one of the most successful that has been held by the club. Favored by ideal weather conditiona there was a very large attendance, the gate takings showing an increase on last year. . The improvements effected by the club during the last twelve months were very favorably commented on. The new course, which is just a mile, was in splendid order, while the extra lawn space provided in front of the stand and in the birdcage enabled the crowd to move about with some degree of comfort. There, is room for improvement in the grandstand and other appointments, but this is part of the programme that the committee have mapped out, and during the year considerable progress wilt be made in this direction.
The racing throughout was interesting- The fields, save in the Cup and President's Handicap, were large, while the finishes were close in the majority of cases. Winners were well concealed, favorites only scoring ou two occasions, a tribute to the work of the handicapper (Mr. H. Coyle). Mr. A. Morse was at the barrier, and almost invariably got his fields away well. Mr. R. P. Morrisoy, in the judge's box, had nornp close finishes to decide, but gave his decisions promptly. The Cup was won by Mr. P. Scally's consistent performer Estlionia, another New Plymouth , horse. Movement, running second. The open sprint event fell to Mr. Selwood's Income, after a 'great struggle with Egmont Park. 1 The totaliaator staff, under Mr. O'Callaghan, had a busy day, but the ex'tra windows provided enabled the staff to handle the investments comfortably. Little money was shut out, and the races were kept well up to time. Mr. D. Ardell was the Government official in the machine, which handled £29,970, as compared with £27,309 last year, an increase of £2681.
Mr. Jewell was the stipendiary steward present, but there were no inquiries. There was no incident to mar the day's pleasure, except in the last race, when Prince Formby met with an accident when in a good winning position, breaking his leg and haying to be destroyed- .. Mr. A. Oood, as president, was as* sidnons in his attention to all, while Mr. P. S. Filey, as secretary, had every detail in his department provided for. The catering was in the hswds of Mrs. Foster, of Hawera, and the refreshment booth was under the control of Mr. Crabtree. The Opunake Federal Band, under the baton of Mr. J. Humphries, rendered a splendid programme of music. The results were as follows: HANDICAP HACK HURDLES, of 135 sovs,, second 20 sovs. and Ihlrd 10 sovs. One imlle and a half. 4—Mr. D. J. Hughes' b. g.
