The ordinary meeting of the Borough Council was held last night. PresentThe Mavor (Mr. J. W. McMillan), and Crs. R. H. Cameron, W. H. 11. Young, C. B. Walsh, C. Jackson, T. Lawson, A. Stewart, W. J. Newton, S. B. Hunter, and J, H. Thompson. When the report of the General Purposes meeting came before the Council for confirmation, Cr. Lawson expressed his intention of moving that clause li, referring to the engineer, should be deleted from the report. At the previous meeting the .matter liad been discussed in committee, and he intended to have it discussed in open council. The Mayor moved the discussion be taken in committee. The motion was seconded 'by Or. Hunter. Cr. Lawson, in vigorously protesting, said the Mayor and the councillors should have sufficient back-bone to take the matter in open council. The motion was carried, Crs. Lawson, Jackson and Stewart voting against it. On resuming, it was reported that clause 17 of the report had been adopted, Crs. Lawson and Jackson voting against it. The report as a whole was then adopted. Cr. Jackson gave notice to move that at the next meeting clause 17 of the report should be rescinded. A petition, signed by five ratepayers, was received, bringing to the notice of the Council that Orlando Street South was reduced to a bog in the winter owing to being constantly used by stock. The Council was asked to have a defined portion of the street formed, drained and metalled before the winter. Mr. M. J. Villers, one of the signatories, explained the condition nf the road. It was decided to refer the matter to the Works Committee to .report upon. It was decided to apply to the bankers. asking for the overdraft limit to he increased by £IO,OOO. The Council agrec-d to co-operate with I the Chamber of Commerce relative to?jriI spoiling the plans and specifications of the new Post Office, before final adoption by the Department. The Mayor presented the Council with a photograph of the previous Council, and was thanked for same. An application from the contractors for permission io shoot boulders from und.T the swing bridge in Cordelia Street, was refused, owing to the danger to the public. THE LOAN WORK. Mr. John SUirroek, advisory engineer in connection With the loan work, submitted a report on the materials on hand and the amount required to complete the work. The excess of cost over the loan would be very slight, and should be more than met by the additional 10 per cent. There was just a chance there might, be no excess. In reply to a question, Mr. Sturrock said he thought the, work from Leyton Street to Pembroke Road could be done this season. Mr. Sturrock was thanked for the information supplied, and it was agreed that he should confer with the Works Committee as to the supply of boulders.
