EVER SOARING HIGHER.
COST OF LIVING FIGURES. , The cost of living, ever soaring higher, is shown by the Acting-Government Statistician to bo 2(1 points higher for January as compared with December. The index number for the three food' groups for January (Dominion weighted average) is reported to be 1088, as compared with the December number 1662. It is found that the war increase in food and rents since July, 1914, is 41.25 per cent.
With reference to the exceptional increase in the index numbers of retail prices of groceries for January, 1020, especially in the ease of the southern towns, this is to a very large extent due to the high prices ruling for new potatoes in that month.
