SAFE BLOWN OPEN.
BURGLARS' WORK AT HAWERA. Some time between the late hours of Saturday night and early yesterday morning 'the safe in Messrs Purser and Son's office, at the rear of their shop in High Street, Hawera, was blown open. The burglars had evidently gained access through the window at'the back of the shop, and thence info the ofiice, where they set to work very skilfully on the operation they had iii hand. The high explosive charge was inserted through the keyhole and ignited by means of'a fuse. To muffle the sound a featherstuffed cushion had been selected from the shop and placed over th 0 keyhole. The explosion wrenched the inner section of the door off the bolts and blew open the door, but did no damage to the books inside. Fortunately for Messrs Purser and Son there happened to he no money left in the safe on this occasion, so that the burglars had all their work in vain.
The whole job had evidentlv been very skilfully and neatly executed, and was apparently not the work of amateurs. The police have the matter in hand.—Star.
