SENSATIONAL DIVIDEND. AT NELSON TROTS. AN INVESTOR'S LUCKY MISTAKE. Nelson, March 5. Quite the oustandlng feature of the Nelson Trotting Club's meeting this afternoon was the huge dividend (an Australasian record) paid by Walroa Belle in tho Wakefield Haadicap. Earlier In the afternoon the ranre did the preliminary for the Ladles' Bracelet, but before going to the post tha stipendiary steward noticed blood running from hopple marks on both her hind legs. The officials refused to let her start till her driver agreed to race her without the hopples, which were blood smeared. In the race she cut a poor figure, being one of the last to finish. Later in the afternoon Walroa Belle, was produced for the Wakefield Handicap, but again thai stipendiary steward ra(ised objection to h6r competing The difficulty was got over by her rider lowering the hopples, and making other adjustments, so that they would not chafe tha sore places. There were fourteen competitors and out of £ISOO odd invested, only one ticket was taken out on Walroa Belle's chance. This was held by a well-known Nelson merchant, who is reported to have received it In mistake for the number he requested from the totallaator clerk.
After going half a mile It was quite evident that thu result lay between Cloralne and Walroa Belle, both of which are grey mares sired by Dictator. Till well into the home straight Cloralne looked an all-over winner, but tiring over the final stages, Walroa Belle just got up In time to defeat her. When It was known that the dividend was well over a thousand pounds, excitement ran high, and there were the usual number of those who "Intended to back the winner" hut had been shut out. Even the owner and rider of Wairoa Belle failed to participate in the huge dividend. Walroa Belle Is trained by L. Birkett, at Hope, and has been racing far many seasons without gaining distinction. Birkett Is a son of a well-known trainer, who. many years ago was associated with the New Zealand Cup winner, Halberdier, Vedette, and other well-known thoroughbreds.
