LIBRARY MART DAY.

A SUCCESSFUL EFFORT. ABOUT £IS4.CONTRIBUTED. Saturday's mart, in aid of the New Plymouth Puhlic library and Museum, was a distinctly successful effort, and the Mayoress (Mrs. Jama; Clarke) may well feel satisfied with the result of her first adventure in this direction. Mrs. Clarke was ably supported by a committee of ladies, who worked very energetically from the commencement of the effort. A number of gentlemen connected with the Library Committee and a few others, together with several boys of the High School, gave valuable assistance. From an early hour, on Saturday the workers were active in Devon Street, the occasion reminding the public of the strenuous efforts of war days. The stalk presented an attractive appearance, as they were erected along the side of the footways, and others were all well stocked' with gifts for the day's effort. The produce stall was housed in the shop recently erected by Messrs Moral Bros., and was filled with a splendid assortment of cooked foods, etc, whih outside the vegetable stall groaned beneath the weight of its load of culinary supplies. Sweets, ice creams, and flowers were on sale at other stalls, while a number of young ladies sold dTaintily prepared buttonholes from baskets which they carried about the streets. A fancy stall was well stocked with dainty articles of needlework and embroideries. The jumble stall contained a variety of articles, most of which were disposed of during the day. Various competitions were conducted and helped to raise the splendid sum of money, which amounted approximately to £154 as the result of the day's business. The following are the results of the competitions:—Cake (donated by the Hygienic Bakery), Mrs. F. Marsh; cake (May audi Arrowsmith), Miss M. Tiplady; picture (Mr. West), Mr. ,T.
