DEARER TEA.
BIG PRICES PROBABLE. The upward trend of the necessaries of life apparently has not yet reached high-water mark. Consumers are faced with the prospect of much dearer tea than even the present high prices. It is regarded a3 probable by one authority (states the Christchurch San) that within a short period the best blends of tea may go to 4s 6d per lb., with the suggestion that the figure will probably be exceeded when later shipments arrive. One firm of merchants in Christchurch think that even 5s per lb. will be reached yet. The chief cause of the abnormal rise is the rate of exchange with India and Ceylon. The price of silver has soared to. such a height that the value of a, rupee has touched 2s 10% d, though it has eased recently. In 1917 the exchange rate was Is 4Jd. In addition to the exchange being against buyers, the market has risen enormously, chiefly due to a more world-wide demand for tea, and a lower production in Ceylon.
