IMMIGRATION.
THE GOVERNMENT'S POLICY. In dealing with the problems of reconstruction, the Prime Minister, the Hon, W. F. Massey, "stated at the conference of the Association of the New Zealand Chninbers of Commerce, that the immigration policy of the Government was as yet only'in its initial stage, but even so the lack of shipping was holding up the stream of immigration bound for this country. On throe ships due here shortly there were immigrants as well as soldiers. The system of nominated immigrants was calculated to bring the very best class of settler, and thousands of people were waiting. On the throe boats—the Athenic, Tainui, and Corinthic—would como the rest of our troops and munition, and other war workers, who had gone from New Zealand during the war. The Governmeat had arranged for the conversion of cargo steamers for the carrying of emigants on the voyage out. and the steamer Maharm would brine about 1100 out, arriving here in April Mr Massey incidentally added that he had had many applicants for •poUtfons as immigration agents in England, but there was no need f or them how. •' Referring to domestics, Mr. Massey said lie understood that about 200 were on their way out now at a cost of about ±.40 each for their passage. Subsequent!-- «,.■ •-onference adopted the following remit:-"That, as tinpresent labor power of this country is not. sufficient to supply the economic needs of the Dominion, the GovernI ment he urged to adopt a strong immigration policy."
