The Stratford Chamber of Commerce met last evening. Present: —Messrs J. B. Richards (chairman), R. Masters, M.P., P. Thomson, D J. Malone, .W. McDonald, C. Martin and the secretary (Mr. W. Power). j Mr. Malone reported that he ~ had 'made some investigations regarding the delay in arrival of goods by rail after they had been landed at New Plymouth. The troubte appeared to be due to congestion at the goods shed and shortage of trucks. The remedy was in the hands of the Department, which should provide more room. Mr. Martin suggested that a sorting shed should be placed at the wharf. Mr. Masters agreed that the accommodation was insufficient, but did not know whether anything could be done at present. The matter involved a new policy and *new buildings. At present the Harbor Board was waiting information as to the point netir the Breakwater where the Opunako line would join the main line. The Board would then know what land was available for leasing, but in the meantime he did not think the Chamber would succeed in getting either the Board or the Government to move in the matter. Mr. Malone remarked that some temporary relief was required. Mr. Masters referred to the fact that the Department was paying its workmen only IJs a day while local bodies wore paying their employees 15s a day The result of this was that the Department was finding it difficult to secure labor. It. was decided, on the motion of the chairman, that the attention of the Tarnnaki, Inglewood. Eltltam and Eawera Chambers "be directed to the delay in the transit of goods from tlie .Frer' water. via New Plymouth, by rail, with the suggestion that a 1 meeting should be arranged with the District Traffic Manager. Tlie resolution added that it was apparent there was a shortage of shed accommodation. Tlie chairman reported that he was unable to attend the annual Conference, whiHi would open in Wellington this week, but Mr. W. P. Kirkwood would rci'wt the Chamber. Mr. McDonald was appointed hororarv auditor. The secretary was voted an hororarium of fifteen guineas. The date of the annual meeting was altered to Fvidav. Marrh 12
