THE PRICE OF HIDES.
STATEMENT BY THE PREMIER The Prime Minister, commenting on the price of hides, said:—"A* regards the present day position, the high values which have been reached at auction sales certainly demand consideration, but at the same time there can bo no doubt but that produceri ami those interests allied with them had reason for their serious dissatisfaction and that an efl'ective remedy wa» necessary. The interests of the general public as well as the true interest* of our manufacturing industries and of the workers engaged in them cannot at the same time bo. overlooked, and the whole matter in its broadest aspect It receiving close consideration, "Information has reached me tHst tanners have already notified a big, increase in the price of leather. Seeing that leather now on the market mint lie derived from hides purchased at Controlled prices under the embargo, thin is a matter demanding attention, ard f am having it pone into at once. It is obvious tlmt leather manufactured from hides purchased at last week's higher values cannot be ready for the market for a considerable time to rotne, mid this mutter must be cleared up. h Dominion,
