Owing to the entire failure of the SUttue rice crop and the partial failure in Burma it it expected the cost will .dotoble. Owing to large Government purchases from South America the food situation is far more favorable and there is no longer any fear of a crisis. Huge quantities of maize and other cereals have been purchased on good terms and ample tonhage is Cable Ann. ATTEMPTED ASSASSINATION. London, Feb. 29. A message from Helsingfors reports an unsuccessful attempt to assassinate Lord Acton, British Minister to Finland. —Aus.*N.Z. Cable Assn. PIGHTING IN ASIA MINOR. Washington, March 1. Cable Assn. TRIAL OP WAR CRIMINALS. London. Feb. 27. Berlin telegrams report that a meeting of German generals and admirals decided to refuse to surrender themselves to a foreign Power as incompatible with soldiers' honor. Only German judges could enjoy their confidence. They asked for an early assembly of a German Court to give them an opportunity of guarding Germany's honor.
