PRESS OF THE EMPIRE.

CONFERENCE IN CANADA NEXT AUTUMN. Definite arrangements have now been made for the second Imperial Press Conference to be held in Canada during next August and September. The Canadian Press, through a representative council of which Lord Atliolstan (Sir Hugh Graham) is chairman, has invited the Empire Press Union to arrange for leading representatives of the newspaper Press of every part of the British Empire to assemble in Canada to discuss- their common aims and interests, and also to obtain, by means of a tour throughout the Dominion, a firsthand knowledge of its life and resources. The Conference has the strong support of the Canadian Government, which lias issued a statement, signed by Sir Robert Borden, Sir George Perley as High Commissioner, and many members of the Canadian Cabinet and Opposition, expressing their cordial approval of the project. The delegation from the United Kingdom will include the proprietors and editors of the load:: s daily newspapers, with Lord Burnham as chairman. Lord Vorthcliffe has stated his intention to attend and the Empire Press Union is now actively engaged in arranging for suitable representation of all the leading newspapers of the overseas Empire. It may be recalled that Lord Rosebery, speaking at the first Imperial Press Conference, held in London m 1909, expressed his uneasiness at the mighty preparations even then being made throughout Europe for war, anil insisted upon the necessity for sustained effort by England. lie said:—"All that we can we will do. but I am not sure that even that will be enough, and I think it may be your duty to take back to your young Dominions across the seas this message and this impression: that some personal duty and responsibility for national defence rests on every man and citizen of the Empire. Tell your peoples—if they can believe it —the deplorable way in which Europe is relapsing into militarism, and the pressure that is being put upon this little England to defend itself, its liberties—and ,yours."
