EXPORT OF MEAT.
THE POSITION IN TARANAKI. CONGESTION AT WAITARA. NEW PLYMOUTH BETTER OFF. The position in the frozen meat in» dustry in Taranaki was inquired inta by a Daily News representative yester* day. Taranaki is not in such a,bad position as Hawke's Bay, where Messrs, Borthwick and Sons' works have had ta close down owing to congestion. Messw. Borthwick and Sons' Waitara works are becoming short of space, and shipping is urgently required, but the Taranaki Farmers' Meat Company at Xew Plymouth has made arrangements to carry its stores and continue killing for some weeks ahead. It was gathered the works at.Smart Boad are not blocked by meat awaiting shipment, but there is a large quantity 'on hand. Arrangements have been made to provide storage elsewhere than at Smart Road, and this wilf enable killing to proceed until the end of April. Before this date relief will bo available, as the Mamari is coming ta New (Plymouth late next month to load. The space allotted on the Mamari is 20,000 freight carcases, which represents about two weeks' killing, and it is regarded as insufficient. If shipments had been regular it would have been different, but by the time the Mamari arrives some four months' will have elapsed be-i tween shipments. The last export was made by the Kia Ora, which took about 70,(100 carcases.
The position at 'Waitara is somewhat more acute. "Generally speaking we are getting very short of space, said nn ; official in response to an inquiry, "and if we do not have a shipment ft the near future we will have to close down." At the present time no advice is to hand of-a. prospective shipment, but the company is expecting some advice shortlv. ■ , .
