Mr. ft. F. Bertrand has joined the teaching staff of the New Plymouth Boys' High School. Mr_ X. C. Harding, town clerk of Patea, who has been suffering from influenza, has resumed duty. Miss Leila Bellringer, who was the East End holiday queen, was presented with a gold bangle by the East End Committee at a social function last night. Owing to the illness of Mr. J. S, Winstanloy, postmaster at,Opunake, Mr, ■l. Shearer, of the New Plymouth office, is acting as relieving postmaster. Mr. C. E. Baker, of New Plymouth, has been appointed to the Advisory Committee of the New Zealand Furniture Trades Industrial Association of Employers. Mr. H. Belshaw, assistant master of the Ashburtnn High School, has received notice of his appointment as science master at the Hawera Technical High School.
Mr. IT. A. Nuttall, superintendent of the Eltham Fire Brigade, Mr. C Evans, of Kaponga, and Captain McLaggan, of Inglewood, left by the mail train yesterday for Hastings, to attend the Dominion conference of fire brigades. Mr. A. E. Sandford, who has been accountant of the Union Bank of Australia, Ltd., Auckland, for seven years, has been appointed manager at Feildjng. Mr. J. H. Baxter, of Wanganui, fills the vacancy in Auckland. His Majesty's Trade Commissioner (Mr. R. W- Da'lton), who has been on an ofhYiul visit to the United Kingdom, and Mrs. Dalton, have arrived in Sydney, and expect to reach Auckland'about March 14th. The death occurred at her residence, Manaia, on Wednesday, of Mrs. Shaw, wife of Mr. B, Y. Shaw, at the early age nf 35 years. The deceased lady had been ailing for some time and her death was not altogether unexpected. A husband and young family are left to mourn their loss. The following appointments to the Arbitration Court are gazetted: Mr. Win. Scott, Dunedin, to represent the employers, and Mr. John Alexander MeCullough, Christchureh, to represent the employees. The deputy members are Mr. William Pryor, Wellington, for the employers, and Mr. Michael John Reardon, Wellington, for the employees.
At the practice of the Opunake Federal Band last Monday night the bandsmen took the opportunity of saying good bye to Bandsman C. H. Hodgson, and presented him with ft valuable safety razor; In making the presentation the conductor, Mr. .7. Humphries, paid a high tribute to Mr. Hodgson as a friend and fellow bandsman. Six important appointments in the Public Works Department have been announced bv the Public Service Commissioner. They are: Mr. H. Vickcrman, formerly staff engineer, Wellington, ns inspecting engineer; Mr. C.J.M'Kenzie, formerly district engineer, Dunedin, as staff engineer, Wellington; Mr. A. J. Baker, formerly resident engineer, Dunedin, as district engineer, Dunedin; Mr. L. B. Campbell, formerly resident engineer, Napier, as district engineer, Stratford; Mr. A. Dinnie, formerly resident engineer, Otira, ns resident engineer, Taumaranui; and Mr. F. S. Dyson, formerly acting resident engineer, Napier, appointment confirmed.
Major S. Blackley, R.A.F (Wellington), is now in London, staying at the Ivanhoe (writes a London correspondent). He-has just returned from the Continent from a special mission to France, Switzerland and Germany, and had arranged to return to New Zealand at the completion of the tour, but has, however, been appointed to accompany one of the Air Ministry .Missions to Merlin in connection with the carrying out of the disarmament of Orrnany, and this mission cannot, enter on its duties until the signing of the protocol. Major Blackley will return to New Zealand in order to take up the position of managing director of Viekers, New Zealand, Limited.
