FATALITY IN A MINE.
WHO WAS RESPONSIBLE If - By Telegraph.—Press Association.' Blenheim, Last Night. The warden's inquiry into nn accident which occurred in the Dominion mine, Wakamarina, on December 14th, and which resulted in the death of L. J. Humphries, waa commenced in tlie Blenheim court. The magistrate, Mr. Ilollings, sat as warden, the assessors teingi Messrs, Thomas Sulliyan and M. Fagan. Mr. Downie, mine inspector, sought to show responsibility lay with the mine manager, who should have insisted on proper timbering in the rise where the fatality occurred, or should have barred anyone from entering it. Counsel for the 'mine 'manager eontended his client had no authority to control the actions of Humphries, who was practically the owner of 'he mine. The warden said the question was, whether there was sufficient evidence to justify cancellation of the mine manager's certificate. The inquiry deferred its decision pending a visit to the mine.
