HIGH PRICE OF SILVER. By Telegraph,—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received Feb. 25, 5.5 pm. London, Feb. IS. The House of Commons road a second time the Bill reducing the fineness of silver coinage. Mr. Austen Chamberlain (Chancellor of Die Exchequer) explained the reason for the enhanced price of silver, which was 28d per ounce in 1!»14, and was now over 88d. It would probably be a long time before it would return to its prewar level. Mr. Chamberlain rejected a proposal to abolish threepenny pieces, for which there is a great demand. The Treasury lias in readings quantities of 5s and smaller note.s, which., though undesirable, must.be issued if the Bill was not passed.—Aus.-N.-Z. Cable Assn.
