The Foreign Affairs Committee discussed the disarmament of Germany, and disclosed the fact that Germany is not complying with the Treaty requirements of a maximum of 100,000 by April Ist The total of the old army and the Reichswehr was now 400,000, and although the military power in its original form was destroyed, it was being reconstituted by immense police forces, despite an apparent diminution in regular troops.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. EVADING THE TREATY. IF WAR CAME AGAIN. SEVERAL MILLIONS AVAILABLE. Received Feb. 22, 5.5 p.m. New York, Feb. 20. The Paris correspondent of the New York Times interviewed General Niessel, who made a report for France concerning the military situation of Germany. General Niessel said there was a vast conspiracy afloat in Germany to deceive the Allies and. escape the fulfilment of the. peace terms, especially in regard to the military clauses. Herr Noske (Minister for Defence) absolutely refuses to submit to these claims. The Treaty provides that Germany shall have a military force of only 100,000, but she has a Reichswehr of nearly 400,000 men, and also 100,000 composed of former officers, and fully armed with field artillery. There is also an organisation of demobilised special officers and athletic culture societies of various kinds. Germany would have no difficulty in putting several million men in the, field in a short time. Germany is also camouflaging ammunition factories, and has amassed huge stores of shells. —Au=.-N.Z.
