U.S. DEADLOCK.

The Senate has frankly abandoned discussion on the Peace Treaty as a result of the Adriatic situation. Senator G. M. Hitchcock (Leader of the Democrats) protested, saying the Democrats anxiously desirous of continuing the dkcussion in order to arrive at speedy ratification. He declared the Republicans were introducing obstacles with the purpose of making the Treaty the issue at the coming olections, and while the Democrats did not fear to make it the issue, -the country wanted quick ratification.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. DISCUSSION IN THE SENATE' A QUESTION FOR THE PEOPLE. Received Feb. 22, 11.5 p.m. Washington, Feb. 21. Answering a suggestion that the United States ought to join the League of Nations first and afterwaTds reform it, Senator Johnston, in the Senate, declared it would be folly for the United States to attempt to rectify the Treaty after signing it. Senator Borah urged the only solution of the deadlock was to submit the issue to the people at the next elections. The Senate rejected Senator Hitchcock*s motion providing a joint resolution of Congress necessary before the withdrawal of the .United States from the League of Nations. Senator Lodge's compromise regarding the withdrawal was negatived by 42 votes to 33.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
