CANTERBURY MARKETS. Christchurch, Feb. 17., Offerings of wheat- to merchants continue in small quantities. Samiples so far have been fair, there being cvldencos of smut In a number of them. The fields are reportd to be very satisfactory and quito three to five bushels better than anticipated six weeks ago. It is expected th.it last year's average yield of 31 bushels per acre will be comfortably exceeded. The market continues strong for Algerian cats due to a steady North Island Inquiry. Algerians appear to l» in less supply than was expected and tho Inquiry Is keeping the market very firm. Business has been done at 5s to 5s 3d at country stations. Cartons are offering freely but business Is practically nil. As far as the North Island Is concerned, merchants there will not deal at the quotations and any business done is largely speculative. There is practically no Inquiry for feed lilies of any description from tho North. Particularly bright samples of Cartons have been sold at 4s 9d at country stations, but all other deals are reported Jo have been on a basis of 4s 3d to 4s 6d. Seed lines continue in good demand. Perennial rye-grass has firmed oi.d is now quoted at from 5s Od to Cs 6d, Italian Is worth 4s 9d to 5s 9d, Barley values are erratic and a few lines have passed through merchants hands.
