Mr. F. Lloyd, clerk to the Ak'.tio County Council, has been appointed clerk to the new lnglewood County. The Rev. 0. Bhmdell, of New Plymouth, who left for the JScuth last week 011 an extended holiday, lias returned to New Plymouth owing to the illness of his daughter.

Senior-Sergeant M. Stagpoolo,'who recently retired from active service In the police force, has arrived in New Plymouth. He intends settling in this district.

Mr. Stanley Smith, president of the Fitzroy Bowling Club, underwent an operation for appendicitis at Nurse Baker's hospital on Thursday. On inquiry last flight it was stated that the patient was ■progressing very favorably.. The death occurred at Maste'rton on Thursday of Mr. George Moss, ft wellknown resident. Coming to Aus-, tralia in 1905, Father McGrath had during the past fifteen years been attached to the various houses in the vice-prov-ince. 110 filled the office of Superior at Tweed Heads, New South Wales, and later at Perth, West Australia. Father McGrath came to New Zealand in December of last year, with a view to helping in the work of the mid-summer retreats.

At a gathering at Wanganui on Friday Captain Leslie Andrew, V C-, now in charge of the Defence Dopai tment in New Plymouth, was made the recipient of a large and very handsome marble clock, with silver plate inscription, presented to him on behalf of representative members of the Methodist Church in all parts of the Dominion The speakers were the Rev. (ex-Capt. Chaplain) H. L. Blamires; who was intimately associated with Captain Andrew on service in Egypt and France,-and the Rev. B. Dudley, awl the presentation was made by Mr \V. G. Basset.t- t Captain Andrew feelingly acknowledged the gift, and on behalf'of his wife ahd himself expressed grateful appreciation of the kindly Sentiments with which it had been accompanied. : Mr. Andrew, senr., also spoke, voicing his heartfelt thanks for the honor that had heen'-'dejic-to i-is son.

The largfi : crowd which, assembled at St. Mary's ■Hall, Haweni, on Friday night to farewell the Xev. Grant Cowen, who has accepted the charge of St. Slat-, thew'a, Auckland, bore emphatic testimony to the esteem which this popular vicar has gained in Hawera during his five years' work there. Mr. Burgess (people's warden) presided; and feelingly expressed appreciation -of Mr.. Cowc-n's organising power's, application, perseverance and optimism, and presented the vicar with a wallet containing a cheque as a token of the goodwill of the people of Hawera., Several other speakers, including the Mayor (Mr. E. Dixon), eulogised Mr. G'oweu's good work. In returning thanks, Mr. Cowen said he had found Hftwera a very happy centre of Christian work, rich and poor, high and low, working together for Christ and His church. At a farewell tendered to him at Normanby, Mr. Cowen was presented with a purse of sovereigns.—Star.
