A CRIMINAL CASE. MR. E. SEMPLE AS PLAINTIFF, The cases, Robert Semple versus Angus Jolm McCurdy, and Robert Semplc v. Flora Mary McCurdy, which were set down for hearing at the tipper Hutt Court on Wednesday, are said to bo the j first, of their kind in the Dominion. | The cases arose out of a statement alleged to have been published in the Hutt Valley Independent, before the General Election. The informations, which are practically the same in each case, are that the defendant .McCurdy published in the' Hutt Valley Independent an untrue statement of and. concerning Robert Semple, calculated to influence the votes of electors, as follows: "'I am a -German awl proud of if—Semple at during the 1914 strike. But at Upper liutt, the other night, he as an Australian, lmt he is not thc\ only 'Red Fed.' Australian with Huns blood in his veins." The alleged offence itf- contrary to the provisions of section' 158 of the Legislature Act, 1908.
