INDIGNANT COUNCILLORS.
RESENT CHARGE OF GRAFT. At Wednesday's meeting of the Hawera Borough Council, Cr. Cumming Paid ho wished to refer to certain statements that had been made outside concerning the concessions granted to Cr. Uormley. It lfad been said toiat -the concessions had been granted because ';he councillors had had their hands well greased. These people should be given '.o understand that such things could not he said publicly, Cr. Morrissey said that during his term on the Council lie had never heard any suggestion of graft. The Mayor said that if anyone was f-o mean as to make such remarks they should he treated with contempt. The Council had to do what they conceived to be right, regardless' of what might be said outside. Cr. Cummings said that what he had referred to war. not innuendo. It was a clear-cut statement. Cr. Gorinlcy said he had heard those whispers, and ho was glad the matter liad been brought up. Had it been liimself only he would have treated the matter with contempt, but it was his duty to vindicate his Worship and the Council. Tin could not allow them to remain under the stigma of such an outrageous statement by a man who, lie understood, holds a prominent, position in the town. He had never offered the .Mayor or councillors money or aiiythiuff else The statement made was a wicked black lie, and only worthy of the mind that conceived it.
