The Taran&ki Fire Brigades' Demonstration wMI be held in the Stratford Domain on Thursday, February 19th. Representatives of all the brigades in Taranaki will be present, in addition, it is hoped, to a number of outside brigades. A aeries of competitions will be held during the day, and in the evening there -will be a banquet to the visiting firemen. The arrangements are in the hands of Superintendent T. G. Grubb, of the Municipal Volunteer Fire Brigade. An unfortunate experience befel a resident of New Plymouth, an elderly man named Neil Hansen, at Midhirst on Saturday night, necessitating his admission to the Stratford Hospital. He arrived by the train from New Plymouth, and was walking, with several others, on the road near the Midhirst Hotel, when a motor cyclist named Stewart came up behind. It is stated that Stewart had a bright light on his machine, and also sounded his horn. The party divided, but Hansen, unfortunately, got in front of the machine and was knocked down, sustaining a fracture of his left leg, just above the ankle. Stewart was uninjured, but received a severe shaking. The injured man was taken at once to the Midhirst Hotel, and, after being attended by Dr. Steven, was sent to the hospital. Although the fracture is described as being a bad one, it is hoped that it will not be necessary to amputate the leg. The Ladies' Red Cross .Society met on Saturday to make further arrangements in connection With Hospital Day, February 21st. It was decided that, in addition to the street collection in aid of the X-ray apparatus for the hospital, to have several stalls 'in Broadway for the sale of goods. Committees were appointed to arrange for the stalls. The rain, which set in yesterday afternoon, continued again this morning, but towards mid-day the atmosphere cleared and there was bright sunshine for a few hours. This was followed by intermit* tent showers, the conditions towards evening becoming rather cold. The root crops and grass lands will be benefited by the rain, but haymaking operations were interrupted. Air. A. Coleman, of the legal firm of Rutherfurd, MacAlister and Coleman, lias returned from a holiday visit to Auckland, which has greatly improved his health'. '" Mr. ('. E. James, who has been on an extensive motor tour of the North Island, is due back this week.

Mr. and .Mrs. R. Dingle, will be leaving for a motor trip this week. Mr. R. Masters, M.P., chairman of the Taranaki Education Hoard, will perforin the opening ceremony of the additions to tho Tokaora School on Friday next, at 2 p.m. .Mr. J. Sullivan has been appointed secretary of the sports gathering which is to be held under the auspices of the Toko Settlers' Association on March 11th. The late Mr. A. F. Rc-id was formerly the secretary. Mr. J. W. Deem,'supervisor of Subsidised Demonstration Farms, arrived in Stratford to-wight by the mail train from Wanganui. Residents of Midhirst. and district are reminded of the dance which is to be held in the Midhirst Hall to-night, tinder the auspices of the Hall Board, in aid-of the Hall funds.
