The Rev. J. H. Simmonds, principal of the Methodist Theological Training College, Auckland, arrived last night on a short visit to New Plymouth. Dr. J. S. Dockrell, son of Mr. and Mrs E. Doekrill, who has served in the medical forces of the British Army since the outbreak of the war, arrived in New Plymouth by last night's mail train. A telegram from Dunedin says the death is announced of Mr. Thos. Fisher, late general manager of the Standard Insurance Co., at Bunedin.
Corporal Patterson, and Corporal Bryski and lis wife, who reached New Zealand iby the transport Ruapehu, arrived in New Plymouth by last night's uiail train.
Adjutant Simpson, recently of Onehunga, who has been appointed to the command of the Eltham Salvation Army Corps, arrived there by the mail train yesterday. He was met by several officers of tho local corps. Mrs Simpson was delayed at New Plymouth and went on to Eltham by a later train.—Argus.
One of tho most remarkable figures in public life in the Dominion was a passenger by the liner Bremen, which arrived at Wellington from England this week. This is Mother Mary Joseph Albert, founder of the Sisters of Compassion, who, despite her age of over 84 years, has been nursing and visiting soldiers in Rome throughout the war. A resident of Auckland for over half a century, namely, Mr. Ebenezer Wood, died on Tuesday at his* residence, "Larwood," road, Hllerslie, aged 81 years. Deceased was the eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Wood, of Grendon Common, Atherstone, Warwickshire. He is survived by his widow, one son, and three daughters, Mesdames P. Chaafe, R. Williamson, and A, Juliap. The following staff cadets from tho Royal Military College have been appointed lieutenants in the New Zealand Staff Corps:—William G. Gentry, Samuel C. V. W. Sugden, Alex. W. Greville, Arthur K. Lambley, Stanley F. Allen, Cyril H. G. Davis, Cyril W. Butterfield, John I. Brooke. Another staff cadet, Arthur de T. Nevill, has been appointed lieu tenant in the Regiment of iioyal Now Zealand Artillery. Staff-Captain Bladin, of tho Salvation Army, who was motoring through from Taranalci on Wednesday to deliver a lecture at Waverley on his experiences at the war, had the misfortune to meet with a nasty accident, which prevented him fulfilling his engagement. While descending the bend' of a hill near Ilawera, in trying to avoid a motor car, the chair attached to his motor cycle lifted, with the result that the cycle capsized, throwins- the rider heavily, inflicting considerable abrasions on the face and a bruised leg. Fortunately no bones were broken. The death occurred at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. F. W. Whitaker, Wnraraoa, on Monday, morning, of Mrs. Emma Finnis, one of the pioneers of the Palmerston North district. Mrs. Finnis arrived in New Zealand in 1874 on the La Hoguc. Taking up her residence in Palmerston North, she lived there until eleven years ago, when she moved to Levin. She leaves a family of nine daughters and one son (Mr. W. IT. Aldridge, of the West Coast),besides 4S grand-children and IB great-grand-children. Mesdames P. Hansen and A. Hewitt (Palmerston North), Mrs. J. Hansen (Waipukurau), Mrs. F. Burton (Auckland), Mesdames G. Banks, H. Atkins and F. Whitaker (Weraroa), Mrs. McTaggart (Sydney), and Mrs. J. Lane (Manaia) are all daughters of Mrs. Finnis.
