"SPORTING LIFeTThE BIG DRURY LANE MELODRAMA. ] "A big picture of big scenes" may be < said to aptly describe Maurice Tour- * neur's melodramatic spectacle "Sporting Life," the big "Artcraft" special which ' shows at the Empire next Tuesday, Wed- £ nesday and Thursday. This picture of the famous Drury. Lane production, which created a furore in London twenty years ago, and later in New York and other parts of the world, shows two of the biggest events of English sportdom: one, the running of the Derby at Epsom < Downs, the other a championship night ( at the National Sporting Club of Lon- . don. The picture production is now 1 proving one of the greatest attractions ] ever screened in the Dominion, beating ' even the records made by its companion ! picture, "The Whip," which, by the way, was also produced by that wizard of 1 spectacular sporting pictures, Maurice ' Tourueur, The screening of "Sporting ! Life" is limited to three nights only, \ and as two of those are race nights, intending patrons sjiould lose no time in reserving their seats. The box plans open at Collier's on Saturday morning. EVERYBODY'S. "THE HANGING JUDGE" TO-NIGHT. The second of the English films to be 1 released in New Zealand since the war is ] a Hepworth production, "The Hanging ; Judge," in five reels, with Chrissie White and Henry Edwards in the lead. It will \ be remembered that these two splendid ( artists appeared in the leading roles of ; "Broken Threads," and their work in j that picture stamped them as performers ; of a very high standard. Each reaches an even higher standard in this latest \ Telease which in every way is a stronger j and more attractive picture. "The i Hanging Judge" is a screen adaptation ; of the book and play by the famous au- , thor, Tom Gallon, and was prepared for the screen by Henry Edwards. The < cast includes many well-known English performers. Besides the two leading artists, Hamilton Stewart as the judge ; gives a remarkable performance. Mr. Stewart is recognised as one of England's most famous actors, and is not unknown to us in New Zealand, having visited this country some time ago with J.C. Williamson's dramatic company appearing in f'Sherlock Holmes" and' other productions. Owing to another "big attraction coming forward to-morrow "The Hanging Judge" will be screened tonight only.
