THE SUGAR SHORTAGE.
NO SUPPLY COMING TO-DAY.
To-day the Rarawa will make its fifth trip in succession to New Plymouth without bringing any sugar for Taranaki, where supplies are now exhausted. It is understood that sufficient sugar to meet normal requirements for several days W£ts to be sent by the Colonial Sugar Company by the Rarawa yesterday, but as it was Anniversary Day in Auckland the watersiders at Onehunga were not working.
A strong plea that the sailing of the Rarawa should he postponed from yesterday until to-day in order to allow the sugar to bo loaded was made by Mr. S. G. Smith, M.P., in a telegram to the Prime Minister. Mr. Smith pointed out the acute shortage of sugar in Taranaki. In reply, Mr. Massey said he had communicated the request to the Northern Steamship Company.
However, the Karawa left as usual last evening. Last night Mr. Smith received a further telegram from Mr. Massey as follows: "On further enquiries regarding your telegram re sugar supplies for New Plymouth, I am advised that New Plymouth is receiving quantities allocated on the same basis as other districts. Under existing circumstances regret not possible to increase allocation for New Plymouth at present."
