THE PARLIAMENTARY TRIP. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Jan. 28. When the Wellington Education Board met to-day, Mr. J. P. Shand moved: "That this board enter an emphatic protest against the action of the Government in arranging an unnecessary visit to Samoa and other Islands in the South Seas, thereby expending large suing of public money that might be circulated to greater advantage in combatting many problems of our time." In the course of the discussion the chairman, Mr. Forsyth, pointed out that the Government should not be blamed, as Parliament had decided that the trip should be made. The motion was defeated. MANAWATU GORGE ROAD. Woodville, Jan. 28. The first meeting of the newly-con-stituted Board of Control of the Manawatu Gorge Road was held to-day. Mr. Nash was eleeted chairman, and the following Tesolutiio was passed: The headquarters will be at Palmerston North, the temporary appointment of a clerk to be left to the chairman; Mr. Jickell (Palmerston North) engaged to carry out repairs to the Gorge Bridge on a 10 per cent, basis, also to prepare a comprehensive report for improvements; that the Minister of Public Works be asked for a £ for £ subsidy for the bridge. Financial arrangements were left to the chairman and Mr.Linklater. scholarship" FOR NURSES. Chmtchurch, Jan. 28. Dr. Fox, medical superintendent of Christchurch Hospital, has sent the ehairman of the Hospital Board a cheque for £IOO, the first donation for a fund to establish a travelling scholarship for Christchurch Hospital nurses and others. If more than one nomination is made in the first year and the nominees come up to the ideal standard, Dr. Fox will forestall the second year's donation. Li the letter to the chairman he says: "The object is to establish at the hospital a small coterie who would, by their ideals and precepts, bring the training school at the hospital above the ordinary level."
