IMMIGRATION.
AUSTRALASIA PREFERRED. MANY READY LN BRITAIN. By Telegraph.—Press Aasn.—Copyright. Received Jan. 28, 10.30 p.m. London, Jan. 27. Whereas in pre-war times eighty per cent of would-be emigrants desired to go to Canada, now nearly fifty .per cent, prefer to go to Australia or New Zealand, according to Commissioner Lamb, of the Salvation Army, who considers Australasia could readily secure a great volume of the best type of immigrants if they were desired. When Commissioner Lamb reaches Australia with General Booth, he may place before the Government general proposals, but he especially asks if they are able to do anything in regard to unwanted children and the overflow of women. He states there are tens of thousands of the former, from two to five yeaTs old, as a result of the war, while as regards women, there are now 1,350,000 more women than men in the United Kingdom. The position is threatening a social upheaval difficult to estimate.— Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
