THE SHIPPING STRIKE.
SETTLEMENT HOPES WANING. By Telecrnph.—Press Assn.— Copyrlcht. Received Jan. 2S, 1.40 a.m. Sydney, Jan. 27. Matters in connection with the marine engineers" strike are apparently at a standstill, and hopes of a -settlement appear to be waning. In the meantime the unemployment and inconveniences resulting from the shipping tie up are increasing. A number of factories have closed or reduced their hands. The latest outcome is that 1500 meat packers are rendered idle. Hundreds of waterside workers and their dependents are feeling the pinch seriously, and are asking for Government relief. A formal month's notice has been given to many deck officers' by shipping com-panies.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
