THE HALF-HOLIDAY.

IMPASSE IN NEW PLYMOUTH, IS A POLL NECESSARY? The prospect of a universal Saturday half-holiday throughout Taranaki at an' early date has received somewhat of a set back on account of an omission in New Plymouth. The Act provides that where the weekly half-holiday has been determined by a poll of ratepayers, the day so decided upon shall remain the dosing day until another day is appointed in accordance with the provisions of thai: section of the Act—that is by another poll of ratepayers. An opinion to this effect was before liie Borough Council last night, in a letter from the Borough solicitors. Tho town clerk stated that he was partly responsible for the position as he had overlooked the faot that some years ago Thursday was decided upon as the holiday by means of a poll of ratepayers. He pointed, out, however, that the Act also provided for the day for the holiday being changed on petition to the Council by a majority of the shopkeepers of the district. Regret was expressed that such a position had been created, especially In view of the fact that other towns were practically certain to follow the lead siren by New Plymouth. It was decided to take legal adtfea as to whether the position could be got over by means of a petition to the Council.
