WAR ON POLICE.
ANOTHER VIOLENT ATTACK. ONE SINN FEINER SHOT. By Telegraph.—Picas Assn.—Copyright. Received Jan. 23, 8.40 p.m. London, Jam 20. The authorities having removed the police from Donbeg barracks, which were recently burned to the ground, Sinn Feiners ordered Constable Costigan and his wife to remove from the neghborhood. Costigan Was removing his furniture in a police motor van with a cyclist escort, when a large body of armed men waylaid the motor. A sharp fight followed, in which the police shot ,and killed a man near a swollen river. The body was swept away in the flood. The police pursued the others, capturing two, who were escorted to Kilfush, where there wins great excitement.—Aus.N.Z. Cable Assn. A MELEE IN DUBLIN.
BAYONET CHARGE IN THE STREET. POLICE PURSUET COMMISSION. Received Jan. 23, 10.15 p.m. London, Jan. 20. The police encountered a procession of motor driver strikers at Dublin. Soldiers captured the banners, and a melee followed, but a bayonet charge scattered the strikers. There were no casualties, but two arrests were made. The Irish Republican Commission, appointed to inquire into the country's resources, arrived at Cork regardless of the prohibition against their proceedings. They found the police in possession of the City Hall. The Commission held a short sitting at the School "of Art, of which the police took possession during the luncheon adjournment. The Commission secfetly assembled during the afternoon at the Court House. Citizens were amused at the hide-and-seek movements. THE MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS. THE SINN FEIN MAJORITY. AN EXTRAORDINARY POSITION. Received Jan. 23, 10.15 p.m. London, Jan. 20. The complete returns of the Irish municipal elections, outside of Derry, show that 550 Sinn Feiners were elected,,394 Labor, 238 Nationalists, 355 Unionistsj, lei Independent, a.nd 158 Reformers. Sinn Fein controls Cork City and dulv nominated three persons to the Lord Lieutenant for the position of High Sheriff, whose duty will be to summon juries to receive the judges at the sessions on bihalf of the city. The three nominees are persons charged with criminal offences. One is charged with wounding a policeflian, a second with having a store of bombs and other explosives; and a third is charged with attempted murder. The first is still in prison awaiting trial. Jhe others escaped when a gang raided the gaol, overpowered the warders, and released the prisoners, and they are still at large.-Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
