UNIVERSITY SENATE.
YESTERDAY'S SITTING. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Dunedin, Jan. 23. At the University Senate, Mr. Von Haast moved that the Government, having provided funds for the purpose of producing a closer relationship between France and New' Zealand, a travelling scholarship in French be established, to be held by a graduate who proposes to become a modern language teacher, and who is prepared for a course of study in France. An amendment was moved by Mr. Segar in favor of opening the scholarship in all modern languages. During discussion, Dr. Cameron, supporting the amendment, said he thought it deplorable that they should seek to shut out the German nation because of its past sins. Everything should be done to remove the feeling of bitterness engendered by the war. The amendment was lost by eight votes to t eleven, and the motion carried.
