SCULLING.

DEATH OF DICK TRESSIDER. "Dick" Tresslder, whose death was reported recently, was bom at Newcastle, N.S.W., on January 24, 1871, and would therefore be just on 49 years. He was of Cornish extraction; and followed the occupation of a fisherman, and later on as a miner at Newcastle. Be made Ills first appearance as a rowing man In 1888, and competed at various regattas In N.S.W. with more or leas success in single and douWe sculling races. His first match race was for a £lO stake, and he won. Then he defeated in turn Jim Fonl and Alf Worboys. He put up some sterling performances at regattas, having a big Innings at the Wallsend regatta In 1899, winning three races. He put up «n astonishing performance at Tort Hunter in 1900, when he was asked to give a good sculler like Chapman SBsec start In 1% miles. He defeated all the other competitors, but was beaten by Chapman by a length after one of the fastest races ever seen on the Hunter River. In 1903 he met and defeated Harry iPearce for the championship of Australia on the Parramatta, and in 1904 he was defeated by George Towns in a race for the championship of the world. Tresslder led for half the dlßtince, and was only beaten after a great race. He then went Into retirement, so far as big sculling was concerned, until he met and defeated Ben Thoroughgood for £IOO asidß and the championship of Australia in 1907. The distance was three miles, and the time, 18min 9sec, was the fastest ever rowed on the Hunter River course. He then came to New Zealand in the hope of winning the championship of the world from W. Webb; who defeated Charles Towns on the Parramatta for the title on August 3, 1907.
