> THE DAVIS OUP. BRITISHERS' SPORTING SPIRIT. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Sydney, Jan. 22. The Telegraph, commenting on the Davis Cup, says that if Patterson had too many strokes for his adversaries they both tested Mm severely by their orthodox methods used with accuracy, activity and endurance. The main reason for Kingscote's failure was Patterson's terrific service, which drove him off the court most of the time, and when the Englishman esayed to break down the service with skilful cross-court drives, he encountered backhand drives that were paralysing In power and lift. The Herald says that under the conditions of unusual heat «the visitors suffered the greatest handicap. The Cup was well lost by the Britishers, who are to be congratulated for their fine display from beginning to end. The Herald concluded by eulogising Patterson's play, whose shots were all too much for the British representatives. Tvice during the Davis Cup contests the Englishmen captured the crowd and won an ovation by their sportsmanlike action. In the first Tound there was some doubt about a shot which the line umpire called against Patterson. Lowe thought otherwise and deliberately hit the next ball out. Then, in the deciding round, Patterson fell and Kingscote refused to take advantage. He threw the point in his favor away by putting the ball into the net.
