ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
SUICIDE BY POISON. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, Jan. 22. Samuel John Ratcliffe, aged 35, a married man living apart from his wife, drank some liquid from a flask yesterday, collapsed and died later in the hospital. The inquest was adjourped to enaJble an analysis of the remainder of the contents of the Bask to be made. Ratcliffe told his brother he intended to poison himself, but a3 he had previously made a similar threat, he took no notice. DEATH OF A BABY. Dunedin, Jan. 22. An inquest was opened to-day on the body of a newly-born infant found in a sack on St. Clair beach on Tuesday with a piece of linen tied tightly round the neck. Dr. Evans said the body was fully developed and well nourished. "There was a circular pressure mark on the neck, and lie was of opinion that the child had lived and that the cause of death was asphyxia]. There was no water in the lungs, showing that it had not been drowned, but there must have been some interference with the air supply. A constable said that tlie 'bag had apparently been in the sea, but could not have been there long. It was found at high water mark. The inquest was adjourned Bine die.
