ASTRONOMY.
NEW PLYMOUTH SOCIETY. "~ The Executive Council of the New Plymouth Astronomical Society met on Tuesday evening. The president (Mr. S. Percy Smith) occupied the chair. Mr. T. M. Avery (honorary treasurer) reported that the sum of £348 8s '9d had now been received or promised. The honorary secretary reported that the iron work for the observatory was all ready and that, after much difficulty and delay, the timber for the dome had been secured through the efforts of Mr. Reid, manager of the Sash and Poor Co. Messrs. Boon Bros, had completed the concrete foundations, and the base for the telescope. It was resolved to wait until the completion of the observatory before taking definite steps to purchase a telescope, and, in the meantime, to endeavor to obtain sufficient additional fuads to secure a ieven-inch instrument.
It was decided to forward a nearty vote of thanks to Sir Robert Stout for his admirable lecture delivered on December 15.
■A werking bee is to be held at the observatory on Marsland Hill on Thursday, 29th inst. It is expected that Mr. A. W. Burrell will be able to'complete the building in about two months.
A remarkable photograph of the moon, taken with the 160-inch telescope at Mt. Wilson, California, and presented by Mr. W. S. Cobham, was exhibited to the members of the Council,
