MEETING FOR BUSINESS. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Dunedin, Jan. 21. The business session of the Senate of the New Zealand University opened to-day. The Chancellor, Sir Robert Stout, jn his address, drew attention to the liberal provision made last session by Parliament for the encouragement of higher education, remarking that perhaps, of all large appropriations of public moneys made by Parliament, none will be as productive as this grant for education. The balance to the credit of university funds for the financial year was £2549 in the general account and £2359 in the scholarship account At the annual entrance and degree exams the number of candidates was greatly in excess of last year's. The number who sat was 2413, against 1501 in 1918. Last year 279S candidates sat for the entrance exxaminations apd scholarships, compared with 2374 in 1918.

The Chancellor referred to the growth of administrative work, calling attention to the need of some > relief being obtained considering the stress and strain to which students were subjected at the 1918 examination. He thought the general report of the examiners in England exceedingly satisfactory.
