GERMANS IN TONGA.
TRADE RIGHTS RESTORED. A notification that the German traders in Tonga are to be again granted licenses to enter into business was arousing considerable feeling there when the Nawia left the group. A letter received by an Auckland resident from a relative at Vavau stated that on December 23 a letter was received by the sub-CoHeetor of Customs at Vavau, from the collector at Nukualofa, stating that German traders applying for licenses would be entitled to receive them. The correspondent remarked that, of course, the Germans would not be able to trade if the New Zealand merchants refused to supply them with goods. He added that the announcement had aroused considerable indignation among the British residents, the few returned soldiers at Vavau being particularly irate.
