BOXING.

A CLEAN SPORT WANTED. I TOO MUCH BETTING. j By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. A conference of representatives of boxing associations throughout New Zealaud was held to-day. Jlr. C. T. Askunan (Chrlstchurch) presided, and In his opening address he urged associations to keep down betting. Boxing was a branch of amateur athletics, but unfortunately a v state of things had grown up under which much of this sport in New Zealand was professional and only a little Bit amateur, and associations Bliould seek to reverse this and have boxing as a sport more general in clubs and schools, as It had been among the troops' at the front. It was decided that permission might at any time be given by a boxing council for a competition between a professional and an amateur, but in advertising the bnut it must distinctly be stated that It was an exhibition contest only. It was decided to obtain a definite statement from the authorities as to whether boxing associations were liable for the amusement tax.

The rule stipulating that a competitor to be eligible for tho championship meeting must be resident in New Zealand six months prior to the contest, was altered making It nonapplicable in the case of returned soldiers.
