SPORTING.
TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa.") The Wellington Racing Club's summer mooting opens at Trentham to-day, and will tie continued on Thursday and concluded on Saturday. The class of horses engaged is fairly good, and fields are just a proper si&e to ensure clean racing. Tarnnakl is strongly represented. Silver Link, Inah, Alteration, Marqueteur, Paddlnffton Green, and others being engaged.
The Wellington Cup has drawn slstoc horses, including the recent Auckland Cu winner, Karo, who, at first glance appears t have a big Impost with 51.7. However, sh won the Auckland Cup under 7.13, 1 and 111 Summer Cup with 9.2, both with ease, an the daughter of Demosthenes should atart firs favorite to-day. Snub and Kilrush, both 01 the B.G mark, do not attract attention, thougl Kilrush Is reported to have been hacked for lot of money, both In doubles and straight out. Kilrush, at any rate, should prove mov brilliant than his vis-a-vis. Surveyor na "truck form again, and should hold the to] weight! safe, with the exception of Karo pos sibty. Mascot, Battle Song, Bed Ribbon Kllmoon, Impediment, and Alteration will al have to Improve on recent form to have i chance, but Oratress, Punka, Amythas am Hose Wreath are a quartette of dangerou: lightweights. Oratress has Improved out o all knowledge lately, and should run well Punka's form at Awapuni and at Marlon can not be accepted as correct. She Is capabli of better things, and on the track not onlj sprints as well as Bindle, but runs on well Her party were not satisfied with her per formances at New Year, nor were many Independent race watchers. Amythas cleaned up the plums at the Duncdln anc Southland summer meetings, and is admlttedi; a much Improved threo-year-old, but the class he beat so decisively was far inferior t( those he is set to meet in the distance handicap* at Trentham. Rose Wreath won over £ mile and a half at Ellerslle, but Oaks' vlC' torles are not often reliable guides to futur< handicap successes. In conclusion, Karo Surveyor and Oratress appear to be as wel handicapped as any, and the best of the trie should be prominent at the finish. Eighteen have been paid up for in the Telegraph Handicap, but the presence of the muchboomed Arrowsmlth may frighten some of tin acceptors out to-day. The Englisli-brec crack has done all that has been asked ol him in this country, and most people wh( saw him in action at Awapuni will conced< that he Is eighteen carat. To-day's trial wll be decisive, and if he can beat his seventeei opponents at the weights he will prove himself all that the enthusiasts allege. Silvei Link has a big impost, 9.3, but she is rorj brilliant, and in this respect, may beat Acri at a difference of 21bs. Spanner, If the Spanner of last autumn, would be dangerous wlti S.IO, but his failures in 'Stralla have caiiset him to he almost entirely overlooked, am perhaps rightly so, in this contest. Chlmen has been winning again lately, but cannot bi regarded as a flrst-flighter, and was reallj lucky to beat Waimatao at level weights a Awapuni. Hymcstra's form has been dlsap pointing, and Miehaela can have little chanei of beating Tigritlya at level weights. Inah': form at Stratford was hardly correct, nn< under a lighter scale of weights she may di much better. None of. the light-weights up pear very dangerous. The writer is 110 prepared to see Arrowsmitli beaten, -but Silve: Link, Tigrltiya and Acre should all keep hir at his best gait. In the minor events big fields and Interest Ing racing seem probable. Fullca sliould bi a strong order in tho Trentham Welter, whll Battle Array will be well supported In th Annirersary Handicap. Demand, who sliouii have beaten Saima at Marlon, may be hari to beat in the Nursery' Handicap, though i Is whispered that Pente lias improved a lot The Ruapehu Handicap looks rery open, bu Hymarty, Swanee River and Sweet Memor can all begin smartly. Scratchlngs ijiay ma .'rrially reduce the field in the Trial Plate but Mica (If reserved), Santorlni and Make piece are all promising sorts. Moorfowl an Right and Left should fight out the Welling ten Stakes. The very fine entries received for the Tnra naki Jockey Club's autumn meeting must, b gratifying to the very progressive committer of gentlemen responsible for the Club's boli policy tills season. Increased stakes were ex pected to numerically increase the entries, aw a certain Improvement in class was antlci pated, but few were prepared foi the great all-round strides made In both respects. Til forthcoming meeting promises to focus alien tlon from end to end of the Dominion, am should prove an Immense attraction to out slders, and an unparalleled advertisement fo \*ew Plymouth. Local sportsmen will wel -Ome the chance to make (or renew) acquaint ince with such smart handicap horses a Karo, Sasanof, Surveyor, Kilrush, Affectation Arrowsmlth, Sliver Link, Hymestra, Waimatao Rose Wreath, Volo, Kilmoon, etc., and there 1 present all the "talent" necessary to enaur i record gathering. The! entries Include re [irc-sentatives of the leading Auckland, Bay, Wellington, Canterbury, and T :iak stables, and it Is expected that a large num lie of sportsmen from these provinces will b( in attendance on February i and 5. A further attraction during the coming racng carnival Is the Taranaki Trotting Club's ttaugura! meeting, to be held at New Plymouth >n the Saturday between the Taranaki J.C. md Egibont R.C. meetings. The entries art lot as numerous as could have been wished, >ut the numbers are sufficient for a successes opening meeting. . As suggested in this :olumn some months back, the Taranaki Troting Club's meeting would have attracted more torses if it had been delayed until Just after he Waimate Plains meeting. As thlng3 stand low the T.T.C. Is assured of a big attendnce of sportsmen attracted by the Taranaki acing carnival, and the newly-formed club liould get a good "push oft."
