Dr Wade underwent an operation for; appendicitis yesterday morning. He i* progressing favourably, but will have to rest for about a month.
Tlie death is announced, at Chicago, of Reginald de Koven, operatic composer, at the age of 69 years.—Cable News.
Hon. J. B. Hine, Minister of Internal Affairs, returned to Stratford by tha, mail train on Satursay evening.
The death is announced from Devon* shire of Mr. George Randall Johnson, M.A., J .P., late member of the New Zealand Legislative Council. Mr. Johnson, who settled in England many years 'ago and whose age was 88, died at Feniton Court, Honiton. He was educated at Bury St. Edmunds and at Clare Col* lege, Cambridge, and was called to the) Bar at Lincoln's Inn in 1861.
Mr P. H. Graham, F.N.Z.1.A., Li* R.1.8.A., wiio was recently appointed architect and housing expert under the Housing Act of last year, was trained in town-planning and housing at tho London University College. Mr Graham practised as an architect in New Zealand from 1907 to 1917, when he enlisted and went to the war. While in England he studied the most recent housing schemes, particularly in regard to the construction of workers' homes. Mr Graham commences his duties with the departs ment on February 2nd.
Messrs 11. D. Forsyth and R. Boyle, reached Eltham by the mall train on Friday evening. They were given a. warm welcome by a large number of friends who met "them at the station. The Eltham Pipe Band, of which Mr H. D. Forsyth is vice-president, turned ou« and gave him a welcome home. Ho entertained them at his house. Mr Tristram, on behalf of the band, expressed their pleasure at seeing Mr Forsyth safe home again. Mr Forsyth suitably replied, thanking the band very heartily for the welcome extended to him. In the course of conversation Mr Forsyth gave some interesting details of his tra« vols.—Argus. An interesting presentation has been made to the Dominion Museum by Mr. Herbert Essex Smily, of Wellington, in the form of a pair of race walking shoes worn in 1876 by the famous walker, William Perkins, of London. Perkins waa the first man to walk eight miles in one hour, a feat which has only been accomplished by about eight men in tho world, including: John Hibberd, Bethnal Green, London; W. Raby, Elland, Yorkshire; J. Meagher, New York, U.S.A, professionals; and W. J. Sturgess, London; G. E. Lamer, London, amateurs. "Billy" Perkins was sft 6in in height, and weighed about 9J stone in training. His stride was. 4ft 9in, and his style was said to be perfect. Perkins assisted in training the amateur walking champion, Hogg, some of the pacing being done by a New Plymouth resident. Private advice has been received ifll Auckland of the death at Victoria, British Columbia, of Mr, Farquhar Macrae, formerly headmaster of the Aueklaftd Grammar School. Mr. Macrae conducted a private school in the northern city prior to becoming the second headmaster of the Grammar School, about the middle of the "seventies." His school wa« then merged in the Grammar School. Many of the present leading commercial and professional men in Auckland wire educated under Mr. Macrae. On retiring from the Grammar School in 1881, &?. Macrae took up the study of law itt Duncdin, and after qualifying as a soli* eitor, practised in Auckland for four or; five years. He then went to British Columbia, and for some time held the) position of magistrate there. On relink quishiiig tin's oifice lie entered into praci tice as a solicitor in Victoria. Mr. MacJ rae, who had reached the age of 8i years, leaves a widow, three daughters] and a son, Mr. K. Macrae, the last-named being in practice as a solicitor in Van' eouver.
