THE HOUSING SCHEME.
PROVIDING HOMES IN TARANAXIi THE GOVERNMENT'S PLANS. On February 2nd Mr P. H. Graham takes up his duties as Chief Housing Supervisor in connection with the housing Bcheme for workers as provided for; by the Housing Act of last year. Associated with Mr Graham will be Mr>H. Meston, who, as Deputy Housing Superintendent,,will devote his whole time to. the work.' There will also be district 1 housing branches, consisting of housing inspectors and clerks, at the four centres and at New Plymouth, Hamilton, Napier, and so on.
Workers' dwellings are being authorised by the Government in every case where reasonable tenders can be obtained, and at the present time 206 dwellings are being proceeded with in different parts of New Zealand including 15 at New Plymouth and 11 at Hawera. In addition, the purchase of about 23 houses already erected has been author-, ised in Wellington, Auckland, .Christ* church, New Plymouth, Nelson, Master-* ton and elsewhere.
In several places where satisfactory tenders were not received for the complete dwellings, contracts were jnado for the concrete portion only, and this is being proceeded with; the department will arrange for the jointly, plumbing, etc!, separately. The appli* cants have also been invited to accept three of the five rooms to go on with, together with the usual conveniences, the remaining two roomß to be added, later on when normality is reached, but none of them have agreed to the/ suggestion. i
